Urgent call to action by the Observatory of the Progressive International
On the eve of the decisive second round of Ecuadorian presidential elections set for October 15, six suspected hitmen in the assassination of former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio were found dead in the Litoral prison in Guayaquil.
From the Observatory, the Progressive International:
Strongly rejects the Ecuadorian government’s attempts to evade its responsibilities in the investigation of the murder of Fernando Villavicencio, which so far remain in complete impunity;
Firmly denounces the mendacious social media campaigns aimed at pinning the murder of Villavicencio’s assassins on other presidential candidates;
Urges the Ecuadorian government to conduct a thorough investigation into the facts surrounding both the murder of the former presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio and the subsequent killing of his alleged assassins;
Demands decisive action from the highest levels of the Ecuadorian government to ensure that these vicious crimes do not go unpunished, and that the principles enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic of Ecuador are respected;
Urges other relevant States and human rights organizations to offer Ecuador their active participation in the investigation, in accordance with the Minnesota Protocol on the Investigation of Potentially Unlawful Death.
