We're hiring: Watermelon Index Organiser

The Progressive International is seeking an organiser to support workers in campaigning for Palestine in their workplace, using a new tool developed in partnership with the Movement Research Unit called The Watermelon Index.

About the Watermelon Index

The Watermelon Index is a tool for resistance against the occupation of Palestine and the genocide of Palestinian people. It is a database of companies that are complicit in Israel’s crimes, and the worker campaigns against them. It is designed to facilitate worker organising around Palestinian liberation in five key ways:

  • Document corporate involvement in the occupation, ethnic cleansing and destruction of Palestine
  • Support workers to investigate corporate complicity
  • Support workers to organise within their own workplace
  • Pressure complicit companies to end their involvement in the oppression of Palestinians
  • Improve outward facing communications about worker resistance to Israel’s crimes

The Watermelon Index is produced by the Movement Research Unit and hosted by the Progressive International. It is supported by twelve partner organisations who specialise in worker organising, Palestine solidarity, and arms resistance.

About the role

We are hiring for an organiser to support workers to use the Watermelon Index. You would respond to worker requests for help with organising, supporting them to develop a campaign strategy that pressures their company to take action around Palestine. You would also work with the Index’s partners to ensure that the Index complements their organising efforts, and directs users to the organisations that can best help them.

The role is part-time, with remuneration, for an initial four month period.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to worker requests for organising support
  • Support workers to put escalating pressure on their workplace, using tactics such as investigative research, open letters, media campaigns, or whistleblowing
  • Work with partners of the Index to represent their campaigns, and direct users towards them
  • Help ensure that the Watermelon Index documents the worker campaigns taking place

What we’re looking for

  • Experience with campaigning around Palestine solidarity
  • Experience of worker organising and / or corporate campaigns
  • Knowledge of corporate complicity in the occupation of Palestine and the genocide of its peoples
  • Enjoys working independently

What we are offering

  • Part-time with remuneration in the region of £1500 per month for an initial fixed-term four month period, details to be negotiated depending on applicants needs
  • Flexible working
  • Office space available in north and east London, if desired
  • Support with research, comms, and partnership-building aspects of the role
  • Exposure to the Progressive International team and wider work, if desired
