The delegation comprises distinguished representatives from around the world, including: Jeremy Corbyn, Member of Parliament from the United Kingdom; Gerardo Pisarello, Member of the Chamber of Deputies from Spain; Andrés Arauz, General Secretary of the Revolución Ciudadana Party from Ecuador; Laura Alvarez, International Director of the Peace & Justice Project from the UK; David Adler, Co-General Coordinator of the Progressive International; and María Luisa Ortega, Political Coordinator of the Progressive International.
Today’s inauguration provides an opportunity to salute the remarkable achievements of the outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Those achievements are economic: AMLO's policies have led to a substantial reduction in poverty and inequality across Mexico, improving the lives and livelihoods of millions of Mexican citizens, young and old. Those achievements are political: In just six years, AMLO has restored the country’s confidence in a democratic system that was once considered beyond repair, cracking down on corruption and bringing the state ever closer to the people that promises to represent. And those achievements are social: Under the banner of "Mexican Humanism," AMLO has united the country under a shared vision of progress and human dignity. He now leaves office with an even bigger mandate for his party, Morena, than when he entered the National Palace six years ago.
That mandate now belongs to President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum, who is sworn in today as the first woman President of Mexico. The delegation arrives to Mexico not only to witness her inauguration, but also to affirm its ongoing support as she enters the National Palace to oversee the construction of the "Second Level" of the Fourth Transformation. We understand that this effort will not be without challenges. Reactionary forces, both within and outside Mexico, have already demonstrated their willingness to obstruct, undermine, and sabotage Mexico's sovereign development. The Progressive International stands ready to support President Sheinbaum and the Mexican people in protecting and advancing their hard-won progress.
Our presence in Mexico City today is thus a commitment to accompany Mexico in its continued struggle for social justice, economic sovereignty, and political transformation. We believe that the success of Mexico's progressive project is crucial not only for the Mexican people but for progressive movements worldwide. In a world of increasing geopolitical tensions, threats, and uncertainties, Mexico's example of resilience, resistance, and dignity offers hope and inspiration to all who seek a just and peaceful world.
The Progressive International extends its heartfelt gratitude to the people of Mexico for their warm welcome. It is an honor to join you in the Zócalo to inaugurate this government of transformation. As we stand together in this historic square, we are reminded of the power of collective action and the enduring spirit of the Mexican people. We look forward to strengthening our bonds of friendship and cooperation in the years to come.
¡Viva México! ¡Viva la Cuarta Transformación!
