Kenyan Peasants League

The Kenyan Peasants League (KPL) is a social movement of peasant farmers, fisherfolk, pastoralists, and consumers committed to food sovereignty, peasant agroecology, and climate justice.
Formed in 2016 in the aftermath of the WTO ministerial meeting in Nairobi, the KPL brings together small-scale food producers and consumers to resist the neoliberal policies that threaten local agriculture, rural livelihoods, and food sovereignty.

Through political education, research, technical training, and national advocacy, the KPL works to advance agrarian reform, family farming, indigenous seeds, and sustainable systems of food production. It promotes peasant agroecology as both an alternative agricultural model and a means to achieve climate justice and environmental conservation.

As the Kenyan member of La Via Campesina, the KPL has become a prominent critic of IMF, World Bank, and WTO policies, particularly in relation to debt, austerity, trade liberalisation, and the commodification of food systems. The movement has played a leading role in struggles against genetically modified crops and IMF-backed economic reforms.

The KPL seeks to build solidarity with peasants, workers, and social movements in Kenya, across Africa, and internationally. It is currently seeking to join the Progressive International as part of its commitment to internationalism and to building alliances against neoliberalism, ecological destruction, and injustice.
