The People's United Democratic Movement (PUDEMO)

PUDEMO, also known as “Insika Yenkhululeko YemaSwati” was established on 6 July 1983 and remains the primary and leading advocate and political force for change in Swaziland.
In its 40-years history, PUDEMO has and continues to consistently agitate for the radical transformation of the Swazi society from the existing backward, feudal, and royal supremacist tinkhundla dictatorship to a robust constitutional democratic developmental state.

Being the vanguard of the noble cause for political and economic freedom of the Swazi people, PUDEMO is guided by its founding mandate as articulated below:

We, the people of Swaziland met on the 6th July 1983 to form the People’s United Democratic Movement, to represent fully the interests of the people of Swaziland and to unite them against undemocratic governance, oppression, exploitation, unfair discrimination, corruption, nepotism, and favoritism. We declare to the world that Swaziland belongs to all its people regardless of race, color, sex, religion, or social status and that PUDEMO is our true representative. We dedicate ourselves to struggling together in unity until final victory.

PUDEMO’s founding mandate reflects its mission to unite the people of Eswatini against exploitation, corruption, nepotism, and political repression. The Movement seeks to create a nation that belongs to all, regardless of race, gender, or social status, and is dedicated to achieving political and economic freedom for all citizens.

PUDEMO is a mass-based peoples’ movement that commands a large constituency drawn from different segments of society across the spectrum of the Swazi socio-political and economic terrain. It is a robust and broad movement that has successfully cultivated a niche for itself as the leader of society in terms of political activism and the drive for transformation of the country to a democratic state. PUDEMO uses the Marxist-Leninist political framework as its primary tool of analysis to drive its radical agenda for the democratization of the country. The Party’s ideological outlook is democratic socialism, which is the overarching political framework towards the national democratic revolution.

PUDEMO describes its vision and mission as follows:

We are a political movement committed to the creation, protection and promotion of a constitutional multiparty democracy, a transparent and an accountable government, an environment conducive to economic growth and economic empowerment and to the development of a cultural vibrant and tolerant society based on Maximum democratic participation and the respect of the will of the people.
